ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)
ESR measures how fast red blood cells settle in a vertical tube. Inflammation increases proteins that make cells settle faster. Non-specific marker – elevated in infection, autoimmune disease, cancer, and pregnancy.

What is the ESR Test?
The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) measures how quickly your red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube in one hour. A faster rate indicates inflammation somewhere in your body. ESR is a non-specific marker — it doesn't tell you where the inflammation is, but it tells you that something is going on. It's one of the oldest and most reliable inflammation markers in medicine.
Why Should You Take This Test?
Simple, inexpensive inflammation marker. Often paired with CRP. Useful for monitoring disease activity in autoimmune conditions.
Who Should Get Tested?
Joint Pain or Stiffness
ESR helps diagnose and monitor arthritis and autoimmune conditions.
Unexplained Fever
Elevated ESR suggests an underlying infection or inflammation.
Autoimmune Disease Patients
Regular ESR monitoring tracks disease activity.
Suspected TB
ESR is typically elevated in tuberculosis.
Warning Signs — When Should You Get This Test?
Common Conditions Detected
Frequently Booked Together
Tests commonly ordered alongside ESR for a complete picture
CRP
More specific inflammation marker — rises and falls faster than ESR
CBC
Often ordered together for a complete blood picture
Rheumatoid Factor
If arthritis is suspected
ANA
If autoimmune disease is suspected
