What is the Prolactin Test?
Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, primarily responsible for milk production. Elevated prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) in non-pregnant individuals can cause menstrual irregularities, infertility, milk discharge from breasts (galactorrhea), and low libido. It may indicate a pituitary adenoma.
Why Should You Take This Test?
High prolactin suppresses GnRH, causing low estrogen/testosterone and infertility. Prolactinoma (pituitary tumor) is a treatable cause.
Who Should Get Tested?
Irregular Periods
High prolactin suppresses ovulation.
Milk Discharge (Non-Pregnant)
Galactorrhea from elevated prolactin.
Infertility
Both male and female infertility.
Headaches with Visual Changes
May indicate pituitary tumour.
